Know Your Options

Medicare Advantage vs. Medicare Supplement

The two most popular ways to get additional Medicare coverage. Understanding the difference is key to making the right choice.

Medicare Advantage (Part C)

Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. They replace Original Medicare and often include extra benefits.

  • $0 premium plans available in most areas
  • Includes Part A, Part B, and usually Part D
  • Extra benefits: dental, vision, hearing, fitness, OTC
  • Uses provider networks (HMO, PPO, or PFFS)
  • Maximum out-of-pocket limit for protection
  • May require referrals for specialists (HMO plans)

Medicare Supplement (Medigap)

Medigap policies supplement Original Medicare by covering some or all of the out-of-pocket costs that Medicare doesn't pay like copays, coinsurance, and deductibles.

  • Works with Original Medicare (Parts A & B)
  • See any doctor that accepts Medicare nationwide
  • Standardized plans (A, B, C, D, F, G, K, L, M, N)
  • Predictable costs covers Medicare gaps
  • No network restrictions or referral requirements
  • Requires separate Part D plan for prescriptions

Understanding Medicare Parts A, B, C & D

Medicare is divided into four parts, each covering different types of healthcare services.

Part A Hospital

Covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and some home health services. Most people pay no premium for Part A if they or their spouse paid Medicare taxes for 10+ years.

Part B Medical

Covers doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, medical equipment, and some home health services. The standard Part B premium is $185/month (2026), with higher earners paying more through IRMAA.

Part C Advantage

Medicare Advantage combines Part A and B into one plan from a private insurer. Most plans include Part D drug coverage and extras like dental, vision, hearing, and fitness programs often for $0 additional premium.

Part D Prescriptions

Covers prescription drug costs. Available as standalone plans (PDP) paired with Original Medicare, or included in most Medicare Advantage plans. Plans vary by formulary, pharmacy network, and monthly premium.

Enrollment Windows

Medicare Enrollment Periods Explained

Knowing when you can enroll or make changes to your Medicare coverage is critical to avoid late enrollment penalties and coverage gaps.

Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)

Your 7-month window around your 65th birthday 3 months before, the month of, and 3 months after. This is your first opportunity to enroll in Medicare Parts A, B, and D, or choose a Medicare Advantage plan.

Tip: Enrolling during your IEP helps you avoid late enrollment penalties that can last for life.

Annual Enrollment Period (AEP)

Runs October 15 – December 7 every year. During AEP, you can switch from Original Medicare to Medicare Advantage (or vice versa), change Advantage plans, join or switch Part D drug plans. Changes take effect January 1.

Special Enrollment Period (SEP)

Triggered by qualifying life events such as moving to a new area, losing employer coverage, qualifying for Medicaid or Extra Help, or experiencing other qualifying circumstances. SEPs allow you to make changes outside of the standard enrollment windows.

Open Enrollment Period (OEP)

Runs January 1 – March 31 each year. If you're enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, you can switch to a different Advantage plan or return to Original Medicare and add a Part D plan. Limited to one change during this period.

Beyond the Basics

Extra Benefits With Medicare Advantage

Many Medicare Advantage plans include valuable extras that Original Medicare doesn't cover. These benefits vary by plan and location.

Dental, Vision & Hearing

Over-the-Counter (OTC) Allowance

Fitness & Wellness

Free gym memberships through programs like SilverSneakers or Renew Active. Access to fitness classes, wellness coaching, and health education programs to keep you active and healthy.

Transportation

Non-emergency medical transportation to and from doctor appointments, pharmacies, and medical facilities. Many plans offer a set number of one-way trips per year.

Flex Cards & Allowances

Some plans offer flexible spending cards for healthy groceries, utilities, rent assistance, and pest control part of expanding supplemental benefits for chronically ill enrollees.

Telehealth
